North is now.... DOWN
on the HiCCD image!
They didn't change
the orientation of the HiCCD Browse image...
SO! The answer
seems to be 2.35 degrees.

04/13/07:
After much
anticipation, The HiRise team released an image of the Face on
4/11/07. A date that is certainly not insignificant, 411 = information. The
image was acquired, however, on 04/05/07. One cannot help but wonder why there
was a 6 days delay on releasing an image that is, by their account, simply a
naturally eroded mesa.
Conspiracy aside,
I was excited to see what I could learn by their latest release.
At first glimpse,
I thought I finally had an answer to the question of exactly where north is and
how FOM relates to it. As I’ve shown throughout my efforts here, the answer is
either 4.7 or 2.35 degrees. Unfortunately, the HiRise team has only added to the
confusion.
This is the image
they display on their web page. This image is called “the Full Browse Version”
and is only about 856kb in size.
The text below
this image goes on to say, “HiRISE captured this image of an eroded mesa
made famous by its similarity to a human face in a Viking Orbiter image with
much lower spatial resolution and a different lighting geometry.
HiRISE is also offering this observation in its HiccdStitch form, with raw
image geometry and North is up:”
When I first read
this, I was very pleased because I thought my question had been answered.
Here’s why:
The “Full Browse
Jpg” as given w/ a vertical line dropped in looks like this:
Same image rotated
4.7 degrees:
Which of course
yields FOM’s secrets:
And:
Ok! Great! But it
was late evening on 4/11/07 and that was all I really had time for. It wasn’t
until the next day when I clicked on what HiRise calls the “HiCCD Stitch
Browse” that I learned the game is still afoot.
Here is that
image:
Now… let’s read
that text on their web page again… “HiRISE captured this image of an eroded
mesa made famous by its similarity to a human face in a Viking Orbiter image
with much lower spatial resolution and a different lighting geometry.
HiRISE is also offering this observation in its HiccdStitch form, with raw
image geometry and North is up:”
I hope my confusion
is obvious because the above image is obviously NOT presented w/
North pointed up.
In order to get
back to the only meaningful orientation, one must rotate the HiCCD
Stitch image 180 degrees, LESS 2.35!

The only other
image I have of this region of Cydonia is from an old Viking mosaic that I
scanned into my computer from Carlotto’s book The Martian Enigmas.
From what I can
gather and compare, The Themis team seems to present all their images precisely
aligned with north pointing up.

On September 21,
2006, the European Space Agency, ESA, finally released their Cydonia images.
Among the images released was a re-release of an older MSSS image. The re-release is presented in anaglyph
form rotated 4.7 degrees off north.
Ironic it seems
that they would at the same time release this completely ridiculous side view
of FOM.
Its as if ESA
banged FOM on the noggin giving him a giant lump!!!
Lump or no lump, I
was not surprised to see the hidden images still apparent even from this
viewing angle.
There were a few
other images released by ESA that confirmed what I have been saying about 4.7.
I’ve come to trust
ESA and the way they orient their images. They didn’t let me down.
Rotate that image 4.7 and there ya have it.
I am really
overwhelmed by all of this. I was finally able to apply my geometry method to
the following ESA Cydonia image.
I should note that
the geometry does not work…But that’s ok because ESA has notated
north on the image and experience shows we can trust that.
There is a
distortion of approximately 1 degree over the entire image. This makes it
difficult and time consuming to do the big mirrors correctly, but they’re worth
the effort!
Here are a few
I’ve done.
The geometry distortion is readily apparent in this image...
That heart which hangs above the Main Face of Cydonia ought to be much closer
together...
I’m excited and
grateful for the ‘nod’ I’ve gotten from ESA. I hope it’s a sign of things to
come.
I would be even
more grateful if they would consider putting some ice on FOM’s forehead to
bring down the swelling! ;)
If I have the
energy, I’ll try and get all of the above posted images linked to full
resolution versions after the Eagles game, which doesn’t start until 4 pm EST.

First a full 20

the time to illustrate exactly why right now. Suffice it to say, some of these

Yesterday, I was
working & surfing the net while my production machines were ticking away. A
quick visit to Keith Laney’s site got my mirroring juices
flowing again. Specifically, this image got me fired up. I noticed something
interesting and I wanted to do at least one more series to see what might
happen.
When I looked at
the image this time, I noticed what I think could be another ‘alignment crater’
like the ones found on the FOM and the Fort. This one seems to be situated on
the ‘Main Face’ of Cydonia.
I may be wrong,
but the results were impressive. Here’s what I’m talking about…
Compare that to
the FOM’s alignment tool…

To get started, I
had to rotate Keith’s image 9.5 degrees. Here’s the setup:

Here’s the show…
I’m not 100% sure
about this one. Here’s a comparison with a close up of the feature. If it is a deliberate ‘alignment crater’, it
isn’t in very good shape.
