FACE ON MARS ANALYSIS
This whole idea of 22.5 being the axis of symmetry has made me rethink my previous ideas.
First, here’s an orthorectified image of the FOM:
Same image inverted:
In this picture, the white lines are 33.3, the red is N/S, and blue lines are 22.5. The big white circle is the center of the sculpture..
Explanation for the above FOM measurements.
1. I started w/ the left buttress of the platform. I already know that’s 33.3 off N/S. I dropped in two 90 degree lines of equal length. They matched visible lines that cross the hominid forehead and continues through the Lion’s ear. Now I have 33.3 from E/W as well as a perfect 90 degree rectangle frame.
2. I then measured the red line to be 33.3 off the platform line. Now I have north. I slid that line into position over the huge circle that’s in the middle of the FOM.
3. I measured 22.5 degrees off of North and slid that line into place over the central dot.
4. The face is aligned both 33.3 and 22.5 degrees off of North.
Well, the above was last night…. Sat. Aug 13, 2005
This is today’s effort starting from scratch.
1. Lay out some noted features. They may have to be adjusted later, but I won’t deviate too far from where they are. They’re just guidelines.
2. My Best straight edge viewing aid is actually the forehead line. The second best is are the two left buttresses.. Sorry the lines are in blue. I will switch them back to white in the next pic or two….. I now have two perfectly duplicable 90 degree segments.
3. Now I’m free to construct any line I want. I. Here I’ve copied each line once and made a perfect rectangle frame around the face itself. (sorry, they’re still blue. They should be white)
4. Ok. Now I’m back to 33.3 being white, red is north/south, blue will soon be 22.5, and yellow will be 60. Here’s North. FOM comes equipped with that handy Center Circle in the middle plus a ridge on the bridge of the nose to put the N/S line into. It looks like this.
5. Here I just duplicate the 33.3 lines. They are absolutely evenly spaced out from the exact center of the FOM’s Center Circle. It is now a verifiable fact that the face has 33.3 degree symmetry. All the lines ‘lock’ into place. Anyone can do this. The symmetry begins with a line in the exact middle of the Center Circle. Work out from there.
6. Here’s the shocker…. 22.5 off of N/S & E/W. With the 22.5 lines N/S though, one must stay on the perimeter of the FOM’s Center Circle. With the 22.5 lines running E/W, one must use the exact center of the Center Circle.
7. I did the same routine w/ N/S. Once again, the lines ‘lock’ into place giving equal spacing starting form the exact center of the Center Circle.
8. On the eighth step, I dropped in a 19.5 ray on the 22.5 line. Guess what happened….
The ornament w/ two lines pointing out of it which sits on the lion’s forehead acknowledges 60 degrees.
If one noticed the sequence, the Teardrop feature didn’t get cut once…. It finally gets a hit.
Up close…

will organize better later.
